Roman Numerals
Musicians name chords in a key by their scale-degree Roman numeral:
In C major: I = C, ii = Dm, iii = Em, IV = F, V = G, vi = Am, vii° = B°
UPPERCASE = major, lowercase = minor, ° = diminished. This way we understand progressions independent of key.
